The Grey Gardens

Mix Shake Stir: Recipes from Danny Meyer's Acclaimed New York City RestaurantsThis one comes from Mix Shake Stir: Recipes from Danny Meyer’s Acclaimed New York City Restaurants. It’s called the Grey Gardens because it features Earl Grey tea. In fact, it’s really just a glass of iced tea with a bit of adult flavor mixed in.

In a shaker, combine

  • 1/4 oz simple syrup
  • 1 1/2 oz Scotch
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Shake with ice, and strain into an ice-filled highball glass. Then add 4 oz of cooled Earl Grey tea on top. Me, I used what was left in my tea cup from the morning’s tea. It was right at 4 oz, oddly enough. Then garnish with a lemon wedge.

This is a great version of iced tea. It’s not super sweet, but it has just enough sweetness to make it palatable and taste like more than simply tea. The Scotch works well with the Earl Grey, them both being rather pale flavors. The lemon scent is the only taste of brightness in the drink. The combination of flavors makes me feel like I should be outside enjoying it, which is exactly what I’m going to do.
