The Moon Walk is a relatively new drink, created about 42 years ago by a guy named Joe Gilmore at the Savoy Hotel in London. It was created to commemorate, you guessed it, the first moon walk. The good thing about being a new drink is that everyone has the same recipe, from Bubbly Girl to Vanity Fair.
At my recent Academy Awards party, this was the best reviewed drink, so it’s worth taking a gander at. In a shaker, combine
- 1 oz Grand Marnier
- 1 oz fresh grapefruit juice (the “fresh” part hopefully goes without saying…)
- 3 dashes of rosewater
Shake all that with ice, strain into a glass (either cocktail, wine, or champagne flute) and pour about 2 1/2 oz of champagne on top. I put a grapefruit twist on top, but really only because I love garnishes, and I love the extra nose it gives.
It’s not as sweet as most champagne cocktails because it doesn’t add any sugar. The Grand Marnier is just sweet enough to make it not bitter. The grapefruit goes perfectly with it, and the combination of rose water and citrus smells play nicely as you try to drink it. It is definitely one of the better champagne cocktails out there.
